Updating Software

I use a lot of open source software.

Roughly translated this means that I download a lot of my favorite everyday applications from the web. I’ve talked about the tools I use before, things like Notepad++ for text editting, or Audacity for audio editting. They are all great tools that I have quite simply fallen in love with.

There’s one thing I never do though… I never update them.

So tonight, I decided I should upgrade at least a few of them. Here’s a list of what I upgraded, and for the sake of it: what I found:

  • Notepad++ (Was on Version 4.2.2, Now On Version 4.6) – What I found was that not much had changed…. BUT, this error I was getting in vista when I closed the program was gone, which is nice because as far as I know, Notepad++ was all that was killing my reliability score the last few weeks.
  • Pidgin (Was 2.2.0, Now 2.3.1) – I was worried about upgrading this because I was quite happy with the state of my carrier pidgin, However, it turned out everything went smoothly. Non of the settings were lost.. and something about the interface feels sharper but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Ok, so there weren’t as many as I thought there would be when I started this post… In any case, just a reminder… You should upgrade those programs that don’t auto-update sometimes :-). You’ll never know what features your missing out on.

I don't like updates. I feel like it will utterly mess up my computer. I still haven't updated to service pack 2. In fact, I don't think I've updated my computer since I got it (August 2001). Have I had any problems with it? No.
