The Twitter Experiment

I love to test human beings.

I love to see how they react to certain things. I love to see how they respond. I love learn their habbits. I love to learn their behaviors. In fact, it’s almost a way of life for me. I have a hard time understanding anything in my life if I can’t see why people are making the decisions they are making. So I’m always looking to learn more.

Twitter has become my playground.

Everyone has been talking about this new rage twitter… Which is really nothing more than public instant messenging. It’s simple. It’s painless. But there is so much to learn from it. For the last few months, I’ve been playing around, testing different ideas. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

  • If you want more followers, talk with them. It’s as simple as that. Watch what people are saying about a topic, and talk with on it over twitter.
  • If you want more followers, do follow friday… Follow people. People love to follow people who are following them…
  • Trending topics tend to be either: things millions of people are doing (like watching a tv show), Headline news (join the conversation), or something “dirty” (like #3wordsaftersex).
  • Viral messages don’t stay massively viral very long. The nature of twitter wipes away “anything big” generally within 48 hours… Goes to show you how fast people move past a topic. However, you’ll always see some post-trend messages that keep it going in the background if it is truly viral.

But my experiments on twitter don’t stop there. Soon, I hope to find out the value of a follower… There are sites out there that may have done it, but I’m curious myself. I also hope to find the value of human time. Should be a rather interesting test.

More coming soon! (Would have been today, but Paypal doesn’t take money out of my bank fast enough).
