And so it begins, It’s Christmas!

Christmas has entered the Gehring household full force.

On Friday, Nikki and our family got together, and opened Link’s first waive of Christmas gifts. If facebook ever finishes encoding the video, I’ll be sure to post it for all to see. We then watched a movie and ate popcorn (it’s what we do!)

Saturday got off to an early start. We dropped off the Jeep to get some new tires (maybe more on this in another post), and then began Christmas shopping. Link did great, we went from store to store, and I believe, only had 1 pit stop, and no fussiness. After about 4 hours of shopping, we returned home to prepare for the evening activities.

Saturday night we had our first of 5 Christmas celebrations. This was Amber’s mom’s side. We ate lots of good food, played games, and of course exchanged gifts. Lincoln especially loved a new ball he got, and Amber was a huge fan of a pair of shoes and socks that he got.

Sunday got off to a pretty crazy start as well. I spent the morning at church. We sand a new song today that I really liked (Hillsong – Born is the King). After that, it was again off to home, where we got ready for Christmas 2 of 5.

Link again got some amazing gifts. All I can say is we are all truly blessed.

Amber’s parents got me 2 expansions for Ticket to Ride (Asia and the Alvin and Dexter pack). We played a ultra mega game of Ticket to Ride USA (55 Trains and Alvin and Dexter) and then headed home after yet another full day, again feeling truly truly blessed.

All in all, it’s been an extremely full weekend… now to lead in to an extremely full week. Thank you all for making Christmas so great all ready, and it’s barely just begun. Enjoy this parting song

Christmas Lists

I always seem to start blogging more around this time of year.

Maybe because it’s the season of reflection. Maybe it’s because I get some time off (although that surely isn’t it right now). Maybe it’s because I just feel like sharing with the world the Joys of things around me.

Who know’s.

Today’s obveservation… Christmas lists.

For the last 26 (ok, well so probably only 25 of those years), Christmas lists have been about things I want. As I got older, they transitioned away from toys, to bigger toys (video games), to things that were somewhat more practical. They were, as it were, always for me.

This year though, things seemed to have changed. Sure, there are a handful of items that you would expect to see (namely 2 3ds games that should last me awhile), but for the most part, I think the things I’m going to be asking for this year are things I want for Lincoln or my family.

I’m not sure what’s causing it… If it’s love, or if it’s because those are now the things I want to make my life better (If Link and Mommy are happy, Daddy is happy). All I know, is that it is a different attitude towards things.

So when you see my Christmas list this year, and it seemingly contains items from my Christmas list when I was a 1-year old… Don’t be surprised… It’s not that I’ve developed a fetish for collecting children’s clothes (oh that’s just wrong)… It’s that I plan on re-gifting them (in a good way).

The Rule of 3′s

Often times when I talk with a client or friend they ask me this simple but rather complex question:

“Should I get a new computer.”

My response is generally, “If you want to, but the one I’m working on will continue to work the same way it has if you don’t want to.” (unless there is actually hardware failure, then I’ll explain the cost/benefits of a new machine.

But I do have a general guideline when it comes to technology… Plan to replace it after 3 years.

The reason is quite simple: Technology changes extremely fast, and your better off buying “trailing leading edge technology” today and replacing in 3 years, than you would be buying “bleeding edge technology” and replacing every 5 years. The one exception to this might if your constantly making small upgrades to it (which most people don’t).

I am fairly certain this is true with pretty much all technologies that are still in heavy R&D. For example: my cell phone. I got a Iphone 3G right around the time I got married. I love the little sucker. It ran all the apps I wanted. It made most of my calls successfully. It allowed me to get my email pretty much anywhere.

Then Amber convinced me that she needed a new phone and a new plan. So I moved here onto my AT&T plan this weekend, and we both got the new iPhone 4s.

And it’s crazy how much a difference it has made in my usage.

The camera is fast enough opening and taking pictures (and good enough quality), that I have a feeling I’ll pull it out 10 times more than I ever used my 3G as a camera. I may even leave my SLR at home.

The apps opened and worked so much faster, that I found myself pulling out my phone rather than walking to get my ipad or laptop to check something.

And Siri… well, that’s just the icing on the cake.

With Amber jumping onto my plan, I needed to add text messaging as well… And interestingly enough, thanks to Siri, you may finally see me jumping on the text messaging bandwagon… In fact, I had my first “text” conversation with my wife yesterday, and I was surprised at how well it worked.

In any case, I should have known when my 3G got to be 3 years old, and it stopped taking the new iOS updates, that it was time for a upgrade…

A Friend On TV

I don’t write often enough about my amazing friends. And yes, they are all amazing, I would expect nothing less from my friends.

In any case, one of my Dr. friends was recently on TV as an expert on the topic of Dog Flu. Personally, I think he did a great job! One of these days, I’m going to have to try to become an expert on TV for something… maybe Tetris…
