Thank You For Helping Me Test
February 2nd, 2008
If you are reading this blog post, then quite simply let me say thank you. Thank you for helping me test a new tool of mine. What tool am I testing you might ask? Well, you’ll just have to scroll down to find out.

No you’re not helping me test a Lorem Ipsum generator. You’re not even helping me test type faces or my design. You are in fact helping me test a new tracking tool that I am presently working on to help me test the usability of certain long pages. The principle is this: To know where you are on my page roughly every 10 seconds as well as when you leave my page. In theory this will tell me two pieces of data:
- Where you get bored in the page… In theory, this is where you stop reading and leave. Most likely with my blog, that will be at some point at the end of a blog post.
- How long it takes you to get over certain parts… For example, with this post, I expect that you end up scrolling down faster over the lorem ipsum stuff than if you had had something vital to read there. This can be a good test of where people are “glossing over”
I plan on making this code a little more public (although for all I care you can read the source now and play with it if you’d like), but before I do, I want to put together a handful more tools and make sure i get all the fun little errors out of it. I hope this is the first of 3 tools to build over the weekend. So stay tuned.
Trying something in Wordpress I have never done
January 13th, 2008
So rumor is there is a feature in wordpress that I have never made use of (which isn’t all that surprising).
The feature allows you to write a post, and put a marker in the post that basically adds a “click here to read more…”
Let’s see if this feature actually works…

It’s to late to apologize
So I’ve been addicted to this song that Timbaland has gone and made popular (although I don’t think it’s originally by him). In any case, I’ve been listening to some remixed versions of it, and decided that January 1st, 2008… Is much to far away to wait to make changes that need to be made.
I have some major faults in my personality that need correcting. Arrogance must go. The need to be right.. must say bye bye. “Acceptable Failure” must be brought back into my life. I’m to focused on unachievable perfection, that it’s taking away from love and life. It’s not what God intended… He didn’t intend for us to be perfect after the fall. I’m a firm believer that perfection is a moving target. I’m a firm believer that the more you get closer to what most people call perfection, the more you reach an unhealthy level of self-made success.
That said, I want others to be my success.
It’s to late to apologize
On that note, I’ve rethemed Rinsefirst to a minimal theme. I was sick of the bugs I was having in the old ones design. This one I can’t take any credit for… It’s just theme for Wordpress known as Simpla. Who knows how long it will last… But really, the words matter more than the pretty images.
I’m hearing what you say
To Sell or Not To Sell
December 11th, 2007
The last 24 hours for whatever reason, have been a lot of looking at the past. Looking at past blog posts of myself. Looking at past blog posts of others. All in all, it’s been a rather enjoyable trip into a rather enjoyable time of my life. It’s made me realize a few things about my life that I would like to get back.
For example, there was a time when I average going out 3 to 4 times a week. Right now, I’m lucky if I go out once.
So last night, I went with Richard to go have dinner at TGIF’s (where Amber works). We had a great time (at least I did) talking mostly business stuff. I brought along the copy of Rinsefirst that I have (the one that there is a picture of in an earlier post). The recurring theme is this: People want me to sell it, or at least print off copies and give them away.
I hesitate to do this for a few reasons:
- There is a lot of information in the first 1000 posts about me, that most people will never take the time to read online. The reason, just to hard to do. It’s surprising though how quickly you can pick up a book and just jump to a post and be engaged in it… Very strange. I’m not sure I like knowing that people are reading into my past.
- The cost causing low demand… It would cost roughly $25.00 to get one for yourself (the thing is like 657 pages long).
- Uneditted - There’s no way I could take the time to edit the book more than I already have. Basically, what I’m saying is, some posts have random UTF-8 characters. Others don’t display their intended message. On the whole, most of them are just fine, it’s just a few random things here and there.
So here’s what I’m going to do. I will take the time to put a decent cover on the thing, and put it up here for sale, if the readers of this site can convince me that it’s worth my time. That said, vote in the poll below, and leave a comment if you think it’s something worth while. Otherwise… Well there is no otherwise.
Rinsefirst Updates
December 3rd, 2007
Nothing to big in this case, it’s just some updates to Rinsefirst. First I upgraded my version of wordpress to the latest version available (I was back at least 1 major point release). And because John over at blueshallow was adding tag clouds to his site, I thought I would do the same… So this will be the first tagged post.
Just a note, the upgrade to Rinsefirst (both the upgrade in version and the upgrade to add tag clouds) took a total of about 30 minutes according to my Twitter off to the right. Just think, to code it might have taken me a hour… or 2.
1000 People in 3 Hours
November 24th, 2007
There’s a part of me that really wishes I had a website as popular as some of the ones I work on. This morning, one of website I worked for launched a sign-up for a free webinar. They sent out an email about it to their list, and within 3 hours, they had maxed out the registrations at 1000. Over the next 30 minutes, they had already had 50 people sign up on the “overflow” list. Those are impressive numbers for a saturday morning.
There not quite as impressive as the number of people who signed up on engadget yesterday for any of their various give aways… but still… very very impressive from my point of view.
I added twitter to my site. I don’t know how often I will use it (or if I will give up on it after a day or two). It’s nice to be able to update my blog with short quips simply by IMing something to a bot. I wouldn’t want to write full posts using AIM, but this seems to work well for my purposes. I’ll have to find out if there is a way to archive twitter.
I watched Numb3rs for the first time on Friday evening. The reason: Wil Weaton (Weasley Crusher) was on it. Wil, to some degree, puts out the persona of everything I aspire to be. Successful in arts, geekiness, love, and life. I think I’m getting there, although my art is no where near as cool as his writings and television appearances are.
Sometimes I feel I’ve lost my zanniness. I look back at some of my older blog posts and think, “what was I thinking.” Maybe this is all part of growing up. Maybe it’s part of being beaten into submission by society. Maybe I’m hiding some part of me.
Perhaps, I should do something zanny with my day. What better time than a time to do it than on a day that *should* be a holiday.
