Site Rename Coming
February 29th, 2004
So after what.. 2 years of being online as JJ’s domain, we are looking at a redesign and site name change. That’s right. Someone over here realized that no one cares about the word’s “JJ’s Domain”. Why? Because although it kind of has flair… it just doens’t grasp you as say, the words “Tumble Dry”. Sooo…
With the approval of Sir Tumble Dry (Alex), this site will be changing over to ‘Rinse First’. Don’t worry, for all of those of you who come to this address, it will work, it will just forward you to my new home when I get it. That is: RinseFirst.com. We even have a marketing plan… Ok, so not really, but kind of :-).
Well, as it turns out, other than that minor announcement… I still have homework I need to do, so I’m going to go do it. Later all.
Finishing Up
February 29th, 2004
Well it looks like hell week is just about over. I know more will be coming soon, and this week could again turn into it depending on timing and such, but hey, that’s life and I love it.
Church was great this morning. Hopefully later tonight you will all be able to register for tickets for something. So stop back tonight to get a free ticket. BWHAHA. We’ll see.
I’m at MSA again for round 18 and a half, ok so not quite, of working with the teacher server. The goal is attendance. bWHAHAHAHa. La de da.
I don’t really have anything else to post right now, I would like to know how Nascar is doing right now.
It just doesn’t stop
February 28th, 2004
So today would be my 5th day of chaos. I’m not sure how long I can handle this, but hopefully, it will all settle out and calm down. Like that ever happens…
Let’s talk about life for a moment. Amber seems all weird. Her post has me a little concerned. But I can’t seem to take anything else on. I don’t want to deal with any problems Amber and I may or may not be having right now… I have to much else on my mind to even try.
I filled out the Boyton Health Survey today. There going to hate mine because it’s basically a clean bill of health. No smoking, drinking, driving. The only thing I checked that really had any signifigance was the word ’stress’. We all have that, some more than others. I think they’ll also like my response to average sleep in the last week. That should be fruitful and probably contradictory results to the rest of the document. If your wondering why I filled out the health survey, it’s because I want a chance at a prize. Stupid prize, but prize non the less. Target 2004 dollar gift certificate. That would last me some time.
I wish Office would finish installing on this machine. I don’t really have time to waste. I’ve been programming and working on computers basically with a 2.5:1 ratio to my sleep time. So if I spent 10 hours on a computer, I got 4 hours of sleep. That’s not so bad, except when you look at it in proportion to other things: Justin got 5 hours of sleep, therefore, he must of spent 12.5 hours on the computer. That’s 17.5 hours of a 24 hour day. Add-in school (4 hours) that brings us to 21.5. That leaves 2.5 hours of “free” time. Move an hour of that to drive times to various things. 1.5. Move an hour of that to talking to amber on the phone: .5. That last half an hour was probably the time I spent eating. So it hasn’t stopped, litterally.
What’s weird though, is other than being tired and exhausted, until today, I’ve been in a pretty good mood. I’ve been rather upbeat about the work and such. But not so much today…. I just don’t want to do it.
In other news: John we love you.
I got my pad back. Played a little DDR with John last night after poker night. Poker night has been the one freetime thing I’ve really had all week. And I probably shouldn’t have even done that with the amount of work I have to do. But I needed to escape, as did many others last night. I think I came out ahead on the night. Nikki surprised us with her rather good poker skills (for never having played with us) and poor Rob… we took his money. We’ll have to have him play with Jerimiah sometime… Maybe a 1 on 1. That game should last awhile. For those of you who don’t know how to play poker and would like to improve your game for free, I will recommend PartyPoker.com. It’s a good site with lots of free tables (as well as money tables).
Well, My break is up. Back to work I go.
Time Out
February 27th, 2004
I need a time out. I need someone to say Justin, go to bed. This week hasn’t been funny.
I love my new job. Really I do. It’s extremely similiar to what I do at MSA. It’s a great group of people. And it’s an even better set of servers. I think I found my new favorite distrib. of linux, but I’ll talk more on that later.
I don’t want to post long because I want to go to bed. To make the long story short, the moment I got on the bus to come home from the U of M, I got a phone call from MSA. The phone call said that the teacher server had died. This is a day we had all long been dreading.
I got to MSA and got to work. It wasn’t something simple, which made me mad. I wish it would have been. I then couldn’t find the boot disks for the tape backup. They were no where to be found. I then couldn’t find NT 4 disks. To tell you the truth, I’m not sure we ever had our NT 4 disks. But wait, it get’s worse. There’s data on that server I need off. I build another server, and then all the client stop working because they aren’t on the domain. My sweety helped me with that. Thank you my love.
Even through all that though, I’m doing well. I’ve got my spirit. But I have a midterm tomorrow that I really need to make a note sheet for. Maybe I’ll do that while I’m compiling apache tomorrow. If I can stay awake. For those of you who didn’t believe computers are my life… Believe now.
First week on the Job: Part 1
February 24th, 2004
So here I am, technically my first paid day here on the job. It’s all the first time I’ve tried working on one of the servers. Scary isn’t it… When you log into a server you know you better not break. When you know it’s your job to make sure other’s don’t break it, that’s scary too.
Then you ask yourself what did Justin manage to do his first day on the job?
Justin managed to shutdown the apache server and not be able to bring it back up. That’s right, Justin crashed the developement server his first day here. That’s when he decided it might be a good time to call his boss and see how to fix it (because the documentation had obviously been wrong). As it turns out, it eluded his boss as well, so Justin’s first task became fix what he had broke, and document how to really restart the apache server… Fun little mission. Justin of course did figure out what the problem was, or combination of the problems were. His boss was of course happy with him, and he lived happily ever after… Or at least till his next encounter with servers.
Right now, I’m in the process of security checking the servers. Making sure they are all up to date and such. I’m actually waiting for one of the things to install, so no, I’m not neglecting my work.. REALLY!
So yeah, I’m going to type my list of things to do here… I don’t know why.. Maybe cause I’m crazy!!!
Read a bunch of documents on what I’m doing.
Get my email interally setup (can’t do tell Seth get’s back)
Fix Midas (Done)
Fix replication query problem on Rivendell (yes, that’s the name of our server)
Check the iptables on Rivendell might be source of problem.
Clean up root mailbox on mordor (yet another server)
Ponder Debian upgrade (or do it… but we like Red Hat)…
Request two new U of M addresses from NTS mycommunity.umn.edu
Get Thwarte Certs for those addresses
Create a GUI replication system for Moria (Another server)
Check for security updates
Install Samba 3
Run a Nessus Security Check (In progress)
Come up with a password plan
Fix Midas Bugs (Possibly created by me earlier today)
Run up2date
Create an RPM for the Content Management system.
Come up with plan for rack.
For my first day… Craaaazy huh?
More post later.
Of course, I have plenty of time to get it all done. That’s life you know.
Forgetting to Update
February 23rd, 2004
So the last 48 hours have been kind of busy… No, they’ve been busy. Very busy. Not so much on Sunday when I watched racing and basically did nothing all day, but more so today. Nutz some would say.
For those of you who haven’t heard, I got a new job out at the U of M. It’s a system admin job, one where I help maintain servers with a group of 4 other guys. Very cool group might I add. Blaine is the one I know the best, he’s a great guy, helping me find my way on these new ropes. Lots of fun, but lots of work.
I’ll post more later, when I have the time. Night all.
